What Does “Full Spectrum” CBD Mean?

Here at Herbal Infusions, our hemp extract products are “more than just CBD.” That doesn’t mean that our CBD products will get you high, it just means that we use full-spectrum hemp oil, which contains all of the beneficial cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It’s one of the many things that set us apart from those who sell only isolated CBD products.

Full Spectrum

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all of the cannabinoids that naturally occur in the cannabis plant, rather than only CBD. Quality full-spectrum CBD products (like the kind we offer here at Colorado-based Herbal Infusions) are high in CBD, but also contain trace amounts of other minor cannabinoids. Despite the relatively low amounts of other cannabinoids, the cannabinoids work together to create an “entourage effect,” or a synergistic combination of cannabinoids.

Entourage Effect

An entourage is a group of people who surround an important person, and you can think of CBD as being the ‘important person’ in full-spectrum hemp products and the other cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other phytochemicals found within the cannabis plant as their ‘entourage.’ Without the attendant cannabinoids, the CBD is less effective.

The entourage effect occurs when CBD is ingested along with these other compounds (the entourage) rather than in isolation. When you experience the entourage effect, you are getting the full health benefits of the hemp plant, rather than a singular part of the plant. More so, all of the parts work synergistically, and the effects of CBD are boosted by working alongside the other compounds, like flavonoids and terpenes.

CBD vs. THC

CBD is the most abundant compound in the hemp plant, and unlike THC, CBD does not provide the “high” feeling commonly associated with the cannabis plant. CBD is primarily used for relaxation, though special blends can also help people focus or feel more energized. Our Colorado CBD company has a special line called CannaTerps, for targeted cannabinoid and terpene wellness, including sleep, focus, and deflame.

THC, on the other hand, is the most common cannabinoid in the hemp plant and can make the user feel “high.” Legally, the distinction between hemp and marijuana is the THC content in the plant; anything less than 0.3% of THC is hemp, while anything over 0.3% is classified as marijuana.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are the primary chemical compound, and both CBD and THC are cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are found within both hemp products and our own bodies, and they can also be created synthetically.

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, which is a neurotransmission network, or a network that sends messages between the body and brain. Cannabinoids can help send the right signals to the brain by regulating different systems within the body.

Terpenes

Terpenes are what give any plant, including the hemp plant, its smell, or taste. There are a variety of terpenes and they’re classified by their taste and smell. Here are a couple of common ones:

  • Limonene – found in citrus fruit peel, bright and citrusy
  • Linalool – the main component of lavender
  • Pinene – named from pine resin

The sharp, bright smell that you experience when you peel a lemon comes from the terpenes with the fruit. The soothing floral scent from a lavender essential oil is also from terpenes. The interesting thing about cannabis is that these three terpenes (and more!) are all found within the cannabis plant, along with 100 other compounds.

Each strain of cannabis has different amounts of terpenes, and plants are also bred to have their own unique aroma and taste. When combined with CBD oil, these terpenes have synergistic effects, which allow for different types of blends and products to create different results. For example, limonene helps to elevate mood. In full-spectrum CBD products, these terpenes work together to create the entourage effect.
